Picking a group name

Postby magpiadmin on Sat Nov 18, 2006 9:05 pm

This topic is for suggesting a name for our group. After serveral suggestions are gathered I will create a poll so we may vote on the name.

I suggest:

Mountain State Geocaching Association

Group Name - Arconyms are fun.

I have no suggestions for a proper name, but I think it should be a pronouncable acronym. Mostly because they are fun.

Ummm....theoretically we could do that....

I like the Mountain State part, but it sure is hard to start a pronouncable acronym with MS, plus we wouldn't want anyone to get us confused with Microsoft <shudder>. I will put on my thinking cap

SWEET!

although I submit that the word "Delinquent" be changed to "Devious"

I'm using that on a shirt.

Yeah .. starting with MS is problematic. How about turning it around?

Maybe ...

That one took me a few seconds...then I got it

sidekick saw an acronym for something the other day that was HAGIS. We were brainstorming other names for Mountains, etc. He suggested Highland Area Geocaching _______ Society.

The only problem there is, well first off "I" words are evil and second, are we really highlands? I always think about up towards seven springs.

WVHunter and I where discussing this at work (Hum, where we suppose to be doing something else. Oh well.) and he said it had been suggested to leave our group a North Central WV group.

On that note we could do:

Mountaineer Area Geocachers - MAG
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Group - MAGG
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Union - MAGU or MAGCU
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Association - MAGA or MAGCA
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Organization - MAGO or MAGCO
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Persons of Interest - MAGPI (like the birdy with no e)

or

Mountaineer Area Cachers - MAC
Mountaineer Area Caching Association - MACA
Mountaineer Area Caching Union - MACU
Mountaineer Area Caching Organization - MACO

or

North Central WV Geocaching Association - NCWVGA (means nothing)
Northern WV Geocaching Association - NWVGA
Northern WV Cachers - NWV Cachers

Just some ideas what are your thoughts.

Here is a logo based on the MAGPI idea:

Of the names listed above, I kinda like these:

Mountaineer Area Geocachers - MAG
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Association - MAGA or MAGCA
Mountaineer Area Geocachers Organization - MAGO or MAGCO
North Central WV Geocaching Association - NCWVGA (means nothing)
Northern WV Geocaching Association - NWVGA
Northern WV Cachers - NWV Cachers

and maybe also:

North Central WV Geocachers - NCWV Geocachers

I did a quick check on the availability of the domain names to go along with all of the acronyms in your list; looking mainly for .ORG domains (but also checking for .COM and .NET). Here's the ones that are currently still available:

magcu.net
magca.org and .net
ncwvga.org, .com and .net
nwvga.org, .com and .net
nwvcachers.org, .com and .net

Also, to go along with the addition I made above:

ncwvg.org, .com and .net
ncwvgc.org, .com and .net

If I had to choose one, it would probably be Mountaineer Area Geocachers Association (magca.org) -- although, it doesn't mention West Virginia in it.

Sorry, I'm not creative enough to come up with a logo to go with it. :(

  • I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

  • I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make when they go flying by.

I like this one....

"Mountaineer Area Geocachers Persons of Interest - MAGPI"

I like the idea of being a person of interest.

What I'm seeing as a logo is a magpie sitting on an ammo can with a GPSr in one foot.

MAGCA was the first one to go through my head. The only reason I don't care for the "North Central" names is a fear of the NC being confused with North Carolina by random Googlers (is that a word).

Can any one else think of some good names. Start suggesting the names you'd like to see in the final poll. Since we are getting into the Christmas season everyone will be busy so I'm thinking we should open a poll for voting on the name after the first of the year.

I was wasting time on the computer last night working on trying to make an image to match the vision in my head (don't worry, it's ok really) when I was shocked to see what a Magpie looked like.

I swear it must be the same thing as the wiley Uraca which we saw in both Spain and Scotland....none of the websites said that though. The Uraca in Scotland was hanging out at the necropolis, so he must have been looking for a cemetary micro (if I find out there is a geocache at that necropolis I'm going to fall out of my chair).
