Here we can cover all things geo-challenge related.

Call for Cachers - Saturday 11/6 & Sunday 11/7

Postby wvhunter on Wed Sep 22, 2010 1:09 pm

With the new ExploreWV Geocoin Challenge in full swing, I think we need a road trip to try and get all the ExploreWV caches in the southern parts of the state.

Here is what I was pondering:

Saturday 11/6th and Sunday 11/7

- We leave the Fairmont area no later than 8AM and drive straight to "ExplorewWV Geocoin Challenge #16 - WV State Museum". (The museum opens at 9AM.)
- Next are the other two Charleston ExploreWV caches
- Next Spencer
- Next Huntington area
- Next swing southeast and get the 3 on the way to Beckleys one
- Next northeast to get four on the way towards Seneca Rocks

Final route to be determined.

We cache on Saturday until dark, find a motel wherever the heck we end up, and continue on until whenever on Sunday.

What do you think folks?

May I suggest that you do Spencer on your way south before doing Charleston? That makes more sense to me. Get off at Wallback on Rt. 36 - cache - then Rt. 119 to Clendenin. Do the state museum, Booker T. Washington, and The Clay Center. Then to Ritter Park, then Heritage Farms, then back on I-64 to Milton to do Mud River Bridge. From there make your way to Logan for Chief Logan museum, down to Matewan, up to Oceana for the Petroglyphs and end the night in Beckley. Next day you can do the Coal Mine, New River Gorge, Greenbrier Trail, Hills Creek, Cass...

Sounds like a blast! But I intend to have all of those done well before then  .

At the rate I'm going, I'll probably still be in FL by the time this comes around.

There you go making sense. Didn't you realize that this involves wvhunter?

I'll see if I can take that weekend off from work. I know I only need two more caches before I get the coin. I'm hoping to finish them up today. Who knows with my schedule though. I just might go for the fun of it.

Allrighty then,
If we take 'anglers advice, (which seems pretty good on the face of it  ), how about this for a possible agenga:

Saturday, 11/06:
1. Spencer N 38° 47.821 W 081° 20.914
2. WV State Museum N 38° 20.238 W 081° 36.847
3. Booker T. N 38° 20.267 W 081° 36.744
4. Clay Center N 38° 20.904 W 081° 37.797
5. Ritter Park N 38° 24.328 W 082° 26.277
6. Heritage Farms N 38° 22.605 W 082° 28.008
7. Mud River Bridge N 38° 25.712 W 082° 07.979
8. Chief Logan SP N 37° 53.641 W 082° 00.530
9. Matewan N 37° 37.307 W 082° 09.969
10. Petroglyphs N 37° 40.891 W 081° 39.901

Rest, relax, recuperate, booze it up, etc, etc, in Beckley

Sunday, 11/07:
11. Coal Mine N 37° 46.943 W 081° 11.796
12. New River Gorge N 38° 04.196 W 081° 05.665
13. Greenbrier Trail N 37° 47.656 W 080° 22.800
14. Hills Creek N 38° 10.592 W 080° 20.231
15. Cass Railroad N 38° 23.945 W 079° 54.691

Homeward bound!

Now, since this is NOT a typical day trip how about a few ground rules.
(Yes, Captain OCD is in the house so deal with it!)

1. If you plan on joining the group then please email or PM me your cell phone number. I'll put together a master list so that everyone can get in touch with everyone else. If you do not want to give out your cell number, that's not a problem, just make sure you are riding with someone I DO have a number for.
2. If your car gets separated from the group, then we will meet up at the next cache location on the list. We don't leave for the next cache until everyone is accounted for.

I now open the floor for the usual comments /questions.

My two cents are as follows:

Good idea about the cell phones.

I'm still a tentative at this point. However, since I've already done agenda items #1 - 7 I'm inclined to meet up with the group at Chief Logan SP. In fact I may just go to Chucktown Friday night.

That being said I'll obviously have room in my car if anyone needs more leg room for the rest of the trip.

I'll bring along my GMRs radios as well. Those are good for on the road communications. That way if someone in the rear of the convoy needs to stop everyone in the group knows.

Pretty fart smeller. Cuz you might as well leave your cell phones turned off once you pass through the dimensional portal just north of Madison on US 119 as cell signal friggin sux in the hinterland. (no offense to '74...I'm sure it works fine in downtown Chapmanville but forget about it in Matewan, Gilbert, Delbarton, etc.)

I too have a couple radios to take along. I was planning to take them on the trip to Harper's Ferry last weekend, but left them sitting on the charger at home ... advanced stages of CRS.

As of now, we're in. Of course I need to explain the wisdom of such a venture to the better half, but that's best left for Friday, November 5th. On the point of radios, I will be packin' as well. FRS and GMRS. And, oddly enough, I'm GMRS licensed. WQHA840.
