I have no idea what GC.com is up to....so I thought I would share the confusion for those who may not have seen this.

Well that looks like they are going to make challenges a separate cache type like trads or multis.

Well the challenges are up and running. I've noticed that some have already been archived. That was fast. It's interesting to see what got so many thumbs downs in a very short period of time.

Two that I saw archived were:
1. Tweet about geocaching and post a screen shot.
2. Take a picture of your favorite beer.

Neither of which require one to use a GPSr to get to a specific location - which I seem to recall being one of the contributing factors when ALRs were no longer allowed.

I read that this is just the first phase and that as things go along there will be more structure.

After reading the FAQ for the new challenges I understand that SSPG is correct. New challenges must have a set of coordinates that take you to a place. Once there you will need to either perform a task or take a picture of something. More categories other than those two will be added in the future.
As far a "locationless", or as they are calling them now "worldwide" challenges, only the folks at gc.com can publish those for now.

While all of the challenges that I've looked at so far have had coordinates, only two require you to go to a specific location to complete the challenge -- one that requires players to ride one of the inclines in Pittsburgh and one that requires a picture taken at the Mountaineer statue in downtown Morgantown (yes, you did yours right). All of the others I've seen allow for a picture to be taken anywhere (i.e., "kiss a frog").

I was very surprised to see that the number of completed "challenges" is added to your geocache totals. Looking at the feedback, I'd guess that this will be changing soon.

  • I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

  • I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make when they go flying by.

I wonder if your challenge can be in a National Park since a cache can not be there

I don't see why not.
I'm looking at a challenge of some kind in Cranesville Swamp.
